The Association was formed in
1953 with a number of objectives in mind, three of which have
remained an annual target, namely:-
1.
To improve the standard
of umpiring and secure uniform interpretation of the Laws
2.
To provide instruction on
the Laws
3.
To encourage a spirit of
co-operation amongst umpires at all levels of cricket
Membership:-
The present membership totals
just less than 160 not all of whom are active umpires.
However, with the volume of matches at all levels in and around
Nottingham, this figure is not nearly enough and enquiries from
umpires, actual and potential are always welcome. Membership of
the Association is not necessary to attend the training courses
but the benefits listed below are only available if you join.
Subscription:-
At £5 per annum, benefits
include personal accident insurance cover whilst officiating in
and travelling to and from matches subject to an upper age limit
plus public liability insurance Four newsletters a year with
NCUA information plus details on other cricket and umpiring
topics; Free examinations; Free copy of the MCC Laws of
Cricket 2003 edition; Social events; Reduced cost membership
of Notts CCC. Nomination to stand in selected county youth and
other representative matches.
Training:-
Instruction is available to
anyone, umpire or enthusiast, who wishes to learn more about
the Laws of Cricket. Courses begin in January each year for 11
weeks on Monday evenings at Trent Bridge catering for the
umpiring needs of everyone from the beginner to the Test match
official. .
The Monday night course
currently comprises three strands. A preliminary group for new
umpires or those seeking basic refresher training; an advanced
group for those who have previously completed a course and
passed the preliminary examination; a discussion group for
experienced/qualified umpires. There is also a shorter more
basic 5 week course on Sunday morning beginning in February.
In either case the cost is just 50p each time you attend.
On sale
at the course are law books and other umpiring accessories. You
will find it beneficial to have a copy of the Laws. There is
the basic MCC Laws book which you will receive free if you join
the Association and also ‘Tom Smith’s Umpiring & Scoring’ book
which as well as the Laws contains detailed explanations of
their operation. This book is highly recommended to those
seriously thinking of taking up umpiring. A new edition has
just been published.
Examinations:-
The NCUA provide an optional
examination for those who wish to obtain recognition of their
acquired knowledge of cricket law.
If you have any queries about
umpiring or any of the courses contact the Hon Secretary at the
address above.
Local cricket is catastrophically short of umpires.
Please help to recruit more members.
