Next Stop Nottinghamshire County Finals -
Burton Joyce were crowned winners at the year 6 Kwik Cricket Gedling qualifiers and will go straight through to the Nottinghamshire County Finals.
In a tight competition, the group of boys from Burton Joyce came through as champions of the Gedling qualifiers, which took place at the Gelding Colliery Cricket ground.
The competition was part of the Cricket in the Community project ran by Nottinghamshire Cricket Board, to help young children get out and get them into the sport of cricket.
Graeme Briggs, one of the cricket in the community coaches who attended and umpired some of the games, said: “This is a great opportunity for the kids to get out and experience organised cricket games to develop their cricket skills.
“As a coach, its good to see kids coming out, experiencing organised cricket games and watch them develop their skills.”
The competition featured ten schools from around the area: Robert Mellors, Parkdale, Arno Vale, Netherfield, Carlton Central, Sacred Hearts, Woodborough, St Wilfrieds, Arnold Mill and Burton Joyce.
The competition featured two group stages, with the winner of the two groups going straight through to the final.
The final was between Woodborough and Burton Joyce.
Woodborough, who had beaten every other team en route to the final, were favourites going into the final, but a strong performance from Burton Joyce, finally broke their resistance.
Both teams have now qualified for the Nottinghamshire County final, which takes place in July.
